The program is open to anyone living with a spinal cord injury, whether the injury is traumatic or non-traumatic in origin. Eligibility is assessed on an individual basis during an initial consultation. We welcome participants at all stages of their recovery journey, from those recently discharged from hospital to individuals seeking long-term rehabilitation support.

New Zealand residents are eligible to apply as fully funded participants. If you reside overseas and are open to travelling to New Zealand to attend the retreat, you are also welcome to apply. International participants may be accepted on a self-funded basis, meaning you would be responsible for covering all associated costs, including travel, accommodation, and any support persons you choose to bring with you. In the context of SCI rehabilitation, this generally means you have been discharged from acute hospital care, any surgical interventions have been completed, you have no active pressure wounds or injuries, and your medical team has cleared you to begin or resume physical rehabilitation. If you are unsure whether you meet this criterion, we recommend speaking with your treating physician.

We provide rehabilitation for individuals across a range of injury levels and AIS classifications, including both complete and incomplete injuries. All programs are clinically assessed and individually designed to ensure safety and therapeutic benefit. Your health and wellbeing are our highest priority throughout every stage of your care.

Athletes and their carers are given an apartment in ‘The Village’ at NZCIS, to reside for the duration of the retreat. This is a fully accessible unit with two king-sized beds, a full bathroom, a kitchenette and laundry.

This retreat is open to everyone, regardless of your previous experience with SCI rehabilitation. If you are open to working hard and dedicating yourself to the entire two-week retreat, we encourage you to apply!
